An Italian-born businessman and diplomat, Angelo Donati played a major role throughout the Italian occupation zone in France from late 1942 onwards. Marianne Spier Donati's childhood was recounted by her friend Olga Tarcali in a book published in 2000. Curious and open to the world, Marianne Spier-Donati later traveled the world photographing the countries she visited. .
