Erich Heckel (1883–1970) was a German Expressionist artist and, along with Kirchner and Schmidt-Rotltuff, a founding member of the artists' circle Die Brücke. The Brücke artists are known for their angst-ridden aesthetic and for the revival of the traditional woodcut. To his enduring glory, seventeen of Heckel's works were confiscated by the Nazi regime and exhibited at the infamous 1937 Entartete Kunst ("Degenerate Art") show in Munich. .
