Contemporary half black chagrin, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons and title, black percaline boards cold-stamped with large geometric decoration. Complete with frontispiece map of Syria.. Abbé J. J. Jobin, parish priest in Molay, Yonne, in the second half of the 19th century, was a scholar, historian, literary scholar and collector. The Druze massacre of Christians in Damascus in July 1860 killed around 18,000 Christians. Thousands were saved by the intervention of Emir Abd el-Kader. This was followed by French intervention by Napoleon III, the lasting consequence of which was Lebanon's autonomy from Syria in 1861. Trace of an ex libris in pencil on the false title (illegible).
