Description: Paris: Arthus Bertrand, 1846. Ten (of 11) handcolored lithographs and the title page and "tables des planches" for the atlas, both text pages foxed. Most. 30 x 25cm..The plates represent the different typesin the population of Senegambia. The trip to Senegambia recounted by Raffenel is the result of a mission entrusted by Bouet-Willaumez, governor of Senegal, to Huard, pharmacist of the Navy and leader of the expedition. The aim was to recognize the upper course of Senegal and the neighboring countries (Bondou, Galam, Bambouk), to assess the commercial possibilities and to visit the gold deposits in the region...The fevers contracted during the trip having caused the abandonment of two members of the expedition and the death of its leader, shortly after his return to Paris, Raffenel became the only member of the expedition likely to tell the story.. Deeming the notes left by Huard unusable and illegible, he finally resorted to his own travel notebooks, which were full of geographical information but had not been written with the aim of being published. These circumstances undoubtedly explain the disjointed aspect of the work..Born in Versailles on 26 APR 1809 to Claude Raffenel and Jeanne D'Ouge. Anne-Jean-Batiste Raffenel married Marguerite Hortence Hoel and had 4 children. He passed away on 13 MAY 1858 in saint denis de la réunion... References: Gay, 2915.
