First part: pl.1-3 (title-Frontispiece engraved on double page, allegorical frontispiece with the arms of the Prince de Conti, portrait engraved on double page), pp. 1-4, pl. 4-10 (project for a pleasure house), pp. 5-8, pl. 11-17 (project for another pleasure house), pp. 9-12, pl. 18-24 (project for a hotel), pp. 13-16, pl. 25-31 (2 plates 30 and 2 plates 31 different) (country house), pp. 17-20, pl. 32-36 (hôtel de Fontenay-Mareuil), Second part: pl. 37 (double-page engraved title), pp. 21-28, pl. 38-49 (hotel project), pp. 29-32, pl. 50-54 (château project), pp. 33-38, pl. 55-60 (Port-Royal monastery on rue Saint Jacques)... A fine, complete copy..A second title is engraved beneath the portrait of Le Pautre: 'Desseins de plusieurs Palais Plans & Elevations en Perspective Geometrique, Ensemble les profiles Elevez sur les Plans'. That is the title under which the work was originally published in 1652. The present edition incorporates plates from two undated publications describing the hôtel de Fontenay-Mareuille and the Eglise du Port-Royal.... Each Discours describes, and shows plans, sections, elevations etc. of, a particular project: 1. 'Une maison de plaisance'; 2. 'Une retraite'; 3. A town 'hôtel'; 4. 'Maison de campagne'; 5. Proposed enlargement of Hotel de Fontenay-Mareuil (later, de Gesvres); 6. 'Hôtel d'un personne de qualité'; 7. Riverside château; 8. Church of Port-Royal (with one unrelated plate showing a siege led by the Prince de Conti).. The author's designs exemplify an Italianising baroque style. One of the designs shown here is thought to have influenced Bernini's first design for the east front of the Louvre; others were adopted by the 18th-century architects G. Boffrand and C.N.
