The Artist and the Book 92; Carteret IV, p.46; Monod 367; Skira 106... "Dufy again paid tribute to Apollinaire [..] by illustrating one of his major pieces of prose fiction. Le Poète Assassiné was originally a book of short stories which took its title from its opening novella. Dufy had attended the launch party for the book organized by Paul Dermée and Juan Gris, at the Palais d'Orléans in Montparnasse on New Year's Eve 1916. In 1924 the Sans Pareil publishing house reportedly invited Picasso to illustrate a new edition of the story, but once again, two years later, it was Dufy who took on the job [..] The closeness of the working relationship between Dufy and Apollinaire is reflected thematically in the collector's edition of Apollinaire's Le Poète Assassiné, produced in 1926, 10 years after initial publication of the work and eight years after the poet's death" (Brown, pp. 4 and 24). .
