The first edition appeared in 1836, and was expanded in 1853 with "exact information up to 1853 on the different states of the New World". This text does not constitute a summary of d'Orbigny's "Journey to South America", but drawing inspiration from the impressions and rich travel experience of the famous French naturalist, it offers a historical, political and geographical panorama of the islands. and American lands (or near America) discovered by European settlers since the first expeditions in the mid-16th century. Thus, the countries described are very numerous: Cuba, Haiti, the Antilles, Guyana, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, the whole of the United States, Canada, the Arctic pole, Greenland and Iceland. To illustrate this journey through time and space, 27 plates out of text in black represent scenes of life, costumes and unexpected landscapes; and, at the end of the volume, 2 large folding maps drawn up by Dufour offer general views of South and North America. .
