Six month's residence and travels in Mexico; Plates lithographed by Marlet after Boquet, Brison, Marlet and Lepinoy....William Bullock was an English traveler, naturalist, and antiquarian. After Mexico became independent from Spanish rule in 1821, he became one of the first British travelers to visit in 1823. He spent six months in the central region of the country, particularly Mexico City and its surroundings in the valley of Mexico. His account of his travels and experiences and his exhibit in London the following year of ancient and modern Mexican artifacts, wax models of Mexicans in local dress, and natural fauna and fruits prompted British interest and investment in Mexico in the 1820s. The plates in Bullock’s book, based on his own drawings, depict indigenous peoples in native dress, ancient deities, scenes of early nineteenth-century social life, and landscapes of the cities he visited...
