The aim of the association, founded in 1831, was to present to the public the latest scientific discoveries, and to debate the effects on people's lives these innovations would have. The annual meeting was an important public arena for the discussion of scientific matters. From the collection of Hon. Gerald Henry Brabazon Ponsonby (1829-1908), Private secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland; son of 4th Earl of Bessborough. .
