Coan studied at the AIC under Philbrick, Ritman, and Anisfeld. He was a long-time resident of Oakland with a studio-home at 1550 Hampel. For 35 years he worked as a cost engineer at Zelinski Company (painting & decorating). He painted murals in San Francisco and Chicago, and followed portrait commissions widely.
