Description: London: 1818. Etching and engraving. 30 x 44cm. Stain in lower left corner.. British Museum number 1880,1113.5290.. Bird's eye view over the palace; the River Thames on the far right; below view a small vignette showing the hall; illustration to 'London before the Great Fire'. 1818..Lettered below image with title, followed by "Winchester House was founded in the year 1107, by William Gifford Bishop of Winchester as a Town dwelling for himself and successors on a piece of ground rented of the Priors of Bermondsey & which was situated at a small distance from the fine convent of St Mary Overy on Bankside Southwark. It was much enlarged by succeeding prelates particularly Bishop Gardiner, in the reign of Mary and covered with its gardens &c three acres and a half of ground. The remains of this magnificent episcopoal residence (which had long been deserted by the Bishops of Winchester) were accidently destroyed by Fire in the year 1814 and only a small part of its ruins now exists. The above exhibits the whole palace in its perfect state". Directly below view "From Hollars large six sheet View of London 1617 / perfected by late existing remains & other authorities", and below vignette "The Hall of Winchester House &c from a scarce view 1619.
