His work is appreciated for its poetic and airy approach, following and updating the tradition of earlier French master painters like Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, and Claude Monet. Gantner’s oeuvre primarily depict the regions of Vosges and Franche-Comté, and are largely made in the studio derived from charcoal sketches the artist makes from observation and en plein air. Born on August 18, 1928 in Belfort, France, he was taught about nature from a young age by his grandfather, who also cultivated Gantner’s drawing ability. He went on to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before moving back to Belfort to pursue his career. Today, Gantner’s work can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He lives and works in Belfort, France..
