Description: Istanbul: Circa 1920s-1940s. Oil on Panel. (45 x 55cm). signed "M. Guillain." Framed. Titled on the verso "Rue des Juifs à Scutari" .. Üsküdar traditionally known in Italian and English as Scutari (Skoutàrion, ?????????? in Greek), and in classical antiquity known as Chrysopolis (Greek: ??????????, 'Golden City'), is a large and densely populated district and municipality of Istanbul, Turkey, on the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus. Icadiye Caddesi, the location of the synagogues, is the main street heading inland, right in the center of Kuzguncuk. If you go by minibus or bus, get off at the Kuzguncuk stop, which is right at Icadiye Caddesi. Located in Istanbul's Üsküdar district, the neighborhood of Kuzguncuk has long been populated by the city's Jewish community, though shrinking in number in recent years. The neighborhood is literally sacred for Jews, as for over five centuries its Jewish cemetery on Nakka?tepe has been the resting place of buried pilgrims who once dreamed of Jerusalem..
