In 1805, the publisher, William Miller, commissioned William Pynet o write and illustrate The Costume of Great Britain. The book included 60 full-page paintings of professional and working-class men and women and scenes from everyday life. William Henry Pyne is generally known as an etcher, landscape painter and author of literature. Pyne combines all three of his talents to produce a charming account which invites the reader to experience the many aspects of early nineteenth century Britain. Pyne exhibits costumes ranging from clergy and military dress to those of milk maids and coal shovellers. .
