Herman was born on December 10, 1916 in San Francisco, CA. He graduated from Galileo High School and received a BA from the University of California, Berkeley where he is listed in the Hall of Fame. Inheriting a family legacy of innovation, compassion and service to the disabled, he began his career by conducting pioneering research in prosthetics at the Biomechanics Lab at UCB and the Mare Island Navy Prosthetic Research Center. .
