Foxed, a few patches of toning. Contemporary half calf, gilt spine with raised bands and black title label, marbled boards, edges sprinkled brown, turquoise endpapers. Neatly rebacked with original spines retained. 2cm loss to tail of vol. I's original spine, but filled in. Calf a little darkened in places, rubbed, inner hinges repaired, very good. To front pastedown-down, small armourial bookplate with the name Barlow. To ffeps, blurry ownership inscription with the surname Barlow, dated 18(58?). To rear endpaper, a library ink stamp (without name of library). From the Preface: 'The present memoirs are founded upon the papers and documents which he left behind him… The work has been put together under the direction and management of the Duke of Elchingen, Marshal Ney's second son.'
