Half-title with full-page engraving of Lipsius on verso; title-page with thick engraved borders depicting Hercules, Pallas, Ulysses, Zeno, Cleanthes, Seneca, and Epictetus; 2 other full-page engravings in the prelims: bust of Seneca; Seneca dying in his bath. Woodcut initials, engraved illustrations. A few library stamps. Some occasional underlining, eg p.553. Occasional toning and light damp staining and some grey marks, a few neat gutter repairs, small paper patch repairing head of final page just covering a few letters, occasional small ink spot. 20th-century library binding. Brown quarter calf, gilt title to spine, brown cloth boards, renewed endpapers with cloth joints. A little bit rubbed, a couple of small stains to boards, a very good sound copy. Bookseller's catalogue entry pasted to half-title, library stamp ' Bibliotheca FF Praedicatorum in Huisen(?)' to engraved title plus a few others eg p.385 head margin, and head and tail of text block. Fifth printing of Lipsius's edition of Seneca's philosophical works (first published 1605). Added for the first time are notes on Seneca's 'Naturales Quaestiones' by Libert Froidmont (1587-1653), a theologian and scientist who was an acquaintance of Descartes and studied the heavens, defending the immobility of the earth in space. Here he takes up Seneca on points of science and geography, discussing amongst other literature recent travel narratives. This printing was singled out from amongst the Lipsius editions of Seneca by Dibdin for its reported magnificence and beauty. "Harwood speaks highly of the magnificence and beauty of the volume, and of the excellent notes of Lipsius: the Bipont editors call it 'Edit. rara et nitida'" (Dibdin).
