The preface states that 'The approbation (the sermon) met with from a considerable part of the audience was checked by the reproof of a leading Counsel at the Bar, (who) seized the opportunity of stepping out of his way in a very crowded court... to reflect on its composition as resembling a Political pamphlet rather than a Sermon.'
