Description: 27 pieces in total including two manuscripts - the remainder are typescripts. The 'glimpse of Swaledale' is heavily annotated; a list of some titles accompanied by assorted numbers (words written?) given on one blank. The author was most probably Miss Mangles, headmistress of the local school during the years of the second world war. Murray and Evenden were active between 1911 and 1920. In effect, they operated as a vanity press, publishing first novels by aspiring authors. The three letters from Mangles here (all addressed 'Dear Sir') provide a sharp insight into the how the system operated - essentially the author fronting significant costs to put their work into print.
