Author: FRANKLAND, J. Title: Northumberland. Calculation of the expense of cultivation of one acre of wheat, barley, and oats, on land worth two pound an acre.
Description: [Alnwick?]: N.P., N.D. (c.1840). Single sheet folded to 2 leaves with second leaf blank, caption title, text tables. Frankland establishes, with calculations, that growing wheat is 'ruinous', oats and barley profitable, and argues for the imposition of a protective tariff on imported wheat - almost certainly as part of the discussion on the retention of the Corn Laws in the 1840's. The author is probably Major John Frankland, gentleman farmer of Branton, near Wooler.
