Jef Van Campen rewards the viewer with a nearly abstract/expressionist use of color and he paints with the spontaneity of his experience. Using impressionistic techniques and expressive symbols, he conveys substance and atmosphere with the minimal means that have become his trademark. If atmosphere is a recurrent theme, then the River Scheldt is never far from Antwerp, nor Van Campens work. The poetic and seemingly prosaic aspects all seem to inspire him.
