Description: New York, Collins. 1813, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, iv, 288 pages. Lacking parts of the spine at the bottom and 2-3mm at the top, front hinge reinforced with Japanese tissue paper. Rare account of an early voyage to the Pacific and Australia. Smith devotes more than sixteen pages (pp.207-223) to his two years in New South Wales from 1798 to 1800. Imprisoned for debt in Sydney, he escaped and lived in the bush, frequently encountering Aborigines whose customs and traditions he describes in some detail. Also a very early voyage in 1801 to the Thames River, New Zealand to obtain Kauri spars for the China market. Other islands visited are Tonga, Marquesas, Tahiti, Rotuma, Ladrone Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Bashi Islands. Good.
