Description: Rotterdam, Andries van Hoogenhuysen. 1654, Third edition, enlarged and revised. Vellum. Book, [24], 389, [19] pages, illustrated title page, 7 (of 8) illustrations. Lacking pages 337-360 including one illustration. This section of 24 pages appears to have never been bound into this copy. This book went through 4 editions between 1650 and 1655. In 1680 it was enlarged and published under the title "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien". All these editions are rare. The second part of Wonderen van't Oosten is based on "Oost-Indische Voyagien" published by Joost Hartgersz in 1648. There are summaries of Dutch voyages to the East Indies from 1595 to 1629. The last chapter gives an abbreviated version of 10 pages of the voyage and subsequent shipwreck of the Batavia in 1629 on the Houtman Abrolhos off the Western Australian coast. There is one engraving which summarizes several of the engravings of the wreck of the Batavia which had been published previously under the title Ongeluckige voyagie, van't schip Batavia in 9 editions between 1647 and 1664. All editions of Ongeluckige voyagie, van't schip Batavia are extremely rare and only very occasionally appear in auctions. The illustrations of the Batavia wreck on the Houtman Abrohos are the first published illustrations of Australia. A rare opportunity to acquire a very early illustration of Australia. Other illustrations show the cabin built on Nova Zembla by Willem Barentsz in 1596 to survive the winter. Another of the illustrations features a Dodo on Mauritius. Good.
