Meanjin was founded in Brisbane in 1940 and is a literary magazine reflecting the breadth of contemporary thinking on literature and other art forms as well as broader issues of the time. The magazine during its first 25 years contained some of the most memorable stories, essays, criticism and poetry including such stories as patrick White's "Down at the Dump" and Vance Palmer's "Mathieson's Wife", A.A. Phillip's biting criticism of "The Cultural Cringe', and T. Inglis Moore's assessment of "The Meaning of Mateship".
