This book isn't just a history of a building but covers a series of lively biographies of the different owners of the cottage which was built on land purchased by John Tawell in 1835. The house is in Ocean Grove Double Bay. Some of the owners were William Thurlow, Sydney Mayor, Thomas Mort a wool broker, Grace Robinson who became Sydney University's first female medical graduate. Characters like artist Conrad Martens, judge Sir Roger Therry, architects Edmund Blacket and John Verge, botanists Michael and William Guilfoyle are also drawn into the narrative.
