Much controversy was aroused at the time by the publication of this small volume, Watson examines all of the records available at the time and comes to the conclusion that; "The major portion of the journals, now extant were compiled and written in England under official instructions and censorship; that many of the names, including New South Wales and Botany Bay, were given in London, and not by Cook; and that the journals were written for publication to claim possession by prior right of discovery under a belief that the Dutch or some other nation were the first discoverers, this belief being the official and confidential opinion of the Admiralty for fifty-three years at least (until 1824) after the conclusion of the Endeavour voyage.
