On 12th November 1852, George Robertson arrived in Melbourne, after spending fifteen years in the Dublin book trade. by 1860 Robertson had built extensive city premises, and on the eve of a business trip to London in 1872, claimed to have sold over £1,000,000 worth of books since his arrival in Melbourne. Both as bookseller and publisher, he dominated the book trade of Australia for the next twenty-five years, establishing branches in Adelaide and Sydney.
