This book is a lively account of the life and times of a Scot who, by his leadership, by his scientific studies and exploration, added so much to the Australian heritage. It was Macleay who with Captain Arthur Onslow, R.N. (James Macarthur's son-in-law), as second-in-command, financed and led the first Australian scientific expedition to New Guinea in the barque Chevert in 1875.
