EISDELL, J. W. - Back Country or The Cheerful Adventures of a Bush Parson in the Eighties.

Title: Back Country or The Cheerful Adventures of a Bush Parson in the Eighties.
Description: First Edition; Cr. 8vo; pp. [vi], 176; illustrated with three full page b/w. photographs, bound in original green cloth, title lettered in gilt on spine, dustjacket chipped and damaged on edges and on back wrapper, cloth also worn on back board, fair copy. London; oxford University Press; 1936. Mr. Eisdell left Oxford in 1882 and took passage for Australia in a sailing ship. After a long, exciting voyage he landed in Melbourne, without any plans for the future. The Dean of Melbourne appointed him as a lay reader in the Gippsland forest, where he had a rough and ready existence. Later he was ordained vicar of Riverina, an enormous district that had to be covered in a buggy or on horseback. There he took a lively part in station life. The book gives an excellent picture of Back Country life in the 1880's.
