Melbourne; Oxford University Press; 1980. Charlie Hammond left England in 1885 at the age of fifteen in search of excitement and adventure in the antipodes. He kept a series of illustrated diaries, or sketchbooks, chronicling his escapades in great detail. This book contains a selection from five of those battered volumes, tracing his story from the eve of his departure to his marriage in 1916 by way of a wonderful variety of experiences in Australia and New Zealand.
