Julian Marshall was tennis correspondent to "The Field" and some chapters in the book first appeared in that magazine in 1876 and 1877. The author describes his work as "the first attempt at a General History and Description of Tennis" Marshall codified the rules of real tennis in 1872 and in 1877, along with two others he produced a revised version of rules in time for the first Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship.
