Title: An Inquiry Into Colonial Policy of the European Powers. Two Volume Set.
Description: First Editions; Demy 8vo; Vol. I. pp. [iv], 588; Vol. II. pp. [vi], 588; marbled endpaper, bound in modern half maroon morocco, raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, attractive set, fine copies. Edinburgh; Printed by D. Willison, Graig's Close, for E. Balfour, Manners & Miller, and Archibald Constable, Edinburgh, and T.N. Longman & O. Rees, London; 1803. Brougham when he was only 25 years old published this major work. It was an immediate success; one contemporary pronounced it the most important treatise on political economy since Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations". In it Brougham devotes considerable attention to the slave trade. Rejecting the dominant opinion in England and in his characteristically forthright way, Brougham called the transporting of Africans "a trade of inequity and shame" and he charged his fellow Britons with being the "ringleaders in the crime".
