Description: First Edition; Demy 8vo; pp. 36; rebound in modern half leather with marbled boards, title on spine in gilt, page edges marbled, new endpapers, a very good copy. n.p. n.d. [the letter is dated at the foot April 28, 1829]. Very similar to Ferguson 1273 except that he calls for three extra pages, the pagination however of this copy is complete within the 36 pages. George Holford (1767-1839) was a lawyer and Philanthropist, his main interest was in prisons, particularly the penitertiary at Milbank, of which he he had been governor. He described it as essential alternative to transportation for short term prisoners, an was a staunch defender of the prison to both the parliament and the press.
