Ferguson, self taught engineer, was involved in a wide range of iron and steel manufacture and fabrication throughout his career. Much of his work remains as testimony to his achievements, some more than a century old such as Brunton's Bridge in Victoria's Gippsland. However , it was pipe making for water conveyance that was to become the focus of Ferguson's attention and the area of his greatest success. His lock bar invention was used in the 563 km pipeline providing Kalgoorlie with water from Perth in 1903, the largest water supply scheme in the world.
