Rose Paterson, like so many Australian women of her day, was a captive in the net of circumstance. Born into a squatter family, she spent the best part of her life at Illalong, an isolated sheep station in western New South Wales, where she brought up seven children in straitened circumstances. One of these children, Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson, was to achieve fame as one of Australia's most popular balladists.
