The petition was part of an Australia-wide campaign to obtain equal citizenship and social justice for Aborigines. The campaign eventually lead to the 1967 referendum in which aboriginal people were formally recognised as Australian citizens, when more than 90% of Australians voted 'yes" in a constitutional referendum to improve indigenous rights and award citizenship to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
