In 1975 an agreement was entered into between the Queensland Government, Tipperary Corporation, Billiton Aluminium Australia BV and French company Aluminium Pechiney Holdings Limited (later acquired by Alcan) in respect of the Aurukun area. The agreement was given the force of law via the Aurukun Associates Agreement Act 1975 (Qld) and a special bauxite mining lease was granted.
