Field Marshal Douglas Haig (1861 - 1928) was a controversial figure at the time this book was published he enjoyed a favourable reputation, but in the time since that reputation has soured. His offensives at the Somme and Passchendaele led to mass carnage, and his nickname of "Butcher Haig".
