London; At the Clarendon press; 1935. Henry Watson Fowler (1958 - 1933) an English schoolmaster, lexicographer and commentator on the usage of the English language. He is notable for both A Dictionary of Modern English Usage and his work on the Concise Oxford Dictionary, and was described by The Times as "a lexicographical genius". This memoir set out to show the personal side of this impersonal writer, it draws heavily on a handful of his surviving intimates, his brother A. J. Fowler, Rev A. J. K. Martyn, Sir Alexander Lawrence, Miss Daisy Tower, Miss Mabel Hart and several others.
