Description: First Editions; Large broadsheet (58 x 42 cm); pp (over six hundred pages in total); a cornucopia of the daily events in Sydney, including ship arrivals and departures, advertisements, politics, news from the law courts, meteorology, sales and auctions, news from the interior, news from Europe, letters to the editor etc.; bound in contemporary red half leather with green boards, title lettered in gilt on spine, some minor repairs to the first and last pages, other than that in excellent condition. Of interest is an Extraordinary Issue for Tuesday November 14, 1848, four pages devoted solely to "The Insurrection In Ireland" Battle of Boulagh Common. Sydney; The Sydney Morning Herald; 1848. The Sydney Morning Herald was founded in 1831 and is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Australia. It was initially published weekly and then in 1840 became a daily publication, the Englishman John Fairfax purchased the operation in 1841 and his family were to control the newspaper for almost 150 years.
