Dr Stefansson (The famous Arctic explorer) was the guest of the Commonwealth Government, he traveled from Adelaide to Oodnadatta by train, and by motor car from Oodnadatta to Alice Springs and back. Two side journeys were made from Alice Springs, one over the Burt Plain to the north of the Macdonnell Ranges, and the other to Hermansberg Mission to the west, and beyond it to the Vale of Palms (also called Palm Valley and Palm Creek).
