He absorbed the lessons of naturalism and plain-air painting at the Art Society of New South Wales School, studying under A. J. Daplyn and Julian Ashton, and began exhibiting works in 1894. Colin Blake Berckelman (1887- 1965) was a bibliophile collecting all sort of things but his main interests were books, bookplates, and erotica.
