Surveyor Major Thomas Mitchell passed through what is now known as Victoria in 1836 naming all the country south of the Murray River "Australia Felix". It was a landmark journey in Australian History as shortly after his expedition the whole region was opened up and settled by the new inhabitants of the continent. Melbourne was founded the following year. The 1847 Thomas Ham map (of which this is a facsimile) was the best map available for people to find their way around Victoria. At the time the map was mounted on canvas and folded to fit into saddle bags. Names and locations of squatters, and the location of inns was given in a separate key to the map.
