London; Charles Gilpin; 1847. Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) was an English prison reformer, social reformer and as a Quaker, a Christian philanthropist. She has sometimes been referred to as the 'angel of prisons". She campaigned to improve the conditions for female prisoners being transported to New South Wales.
