This is the first study of Australian Literature and although it only considers writers of New South Wales it is a most important work. William Walker was born in 1823 in England and came to Australia in 1837. He became a lawyer and a member of the Legislative Assembly of NSW but lived most of his life in the country town of Windsor NSW. He established the Windsor School of Arts and became its President. It was in this position that he gave his lectures on Australian Literature in 1864 which was the first on this subject to be published as a book.
