MCCARTHY, DENNIS J; Compiler. - Lansell's Fortuna.

Title: Lansell's Fortuna.
Description: Lge. 8vo; pp. 36; profusely illustrated with photographs; sources; stiff illustrated stapled wrapper; a fine copy. Printed by Army Survey Regiment September 1988. In 1855 JTC Ballerstedt erected one of the first quartz crushing mills on the Bendigo gold fields. By early the next year he had erected an eight room verandaless double fronted semi-basement house constructed of red brick with stucco dressings to the window and door openings. A detached kitchen to the south of the house and a store to the north between the house and quartz mill had also been erected. Between 1858 and 1869 substantial construction work was carried out to the surrounds and the house. On 6 May 1871 he sold the villa to George Lansell , other work to the house did continue. This brochure attempts to encapsulate some of the grandeur of the old building and perhaps what is more important, the vision and enterprise that saw the strange complex of the mansion, gardens and mine buildings develop on this site adjoining the New Chum Reef.
