Drysdale; Historical Solutions; 2011. The story chronicles the journey of two of the 64 pounders from their origins in the industrial heartland of Bradford in northern England and their long voyage to Australia on board the Nelson. The ship played an important role in defending Victoria for over two decades before she was decommissioned and her guns placed in storage. With Federation approaching and the outbreak of the Boer war, it was decided to donate the guns to towns around regional Victoria to aid recruitment and to promote patriotism. Two of the 64's were given to Bendigo and after being on display for many years they disappeared. Years later, a chance discovery during an archaeological dig brings new life and their relocation to Fort Queenscliff - the heart of Victorian colonial defence.
