The first edition of this work [3500 copies] was sold out in six weeks, and the second edition [also 3500 copies] was ready for sale a month later. The book was well received and is credited with catapulting Boswell to fame 23 years before his best known work, "The Life of Samuel Johnson" was produced. Such was the success of the book it is said that Boswell was referred to throughout his life thereafter as "Corsica Boswell".
