Luther Scammell (1826-1910), took up a position as ships doctor on the barque "William Wilson" he with a brother and sister left the Thames on May 13 1849. On arrival in South Australia, Luther Scammell was encouraged to try his fortune at the newly developing copper mining town of Burra but, after seeing the place, decided not to enter into practice there, so he returned to Adelaide and set up a practice at Hindmarsh where he also opened a pharmacy. Here he prospered and entered into the life of the community assisting in the establishment of the Hindmarsh Public Library and became its first president.
