Two Volume set in Black cloth boards with gilt title lettering to spines and upper covers.With red lined borders to top and bottom and there is printer's inprint stamped in blind to the centre of the rear covers.Graded Very Good Copies,light wear to corners,with black matt endpapers in very good order.There are NO previous owner's names or inscriptions present.The books have firm bindings with no hinge weakness.Tght square copy.There is some modest age toning and foxing to the page edges.The title page to Vol II is still uncut.Illustrated with some 12 plates to Volume 1 and with 31 plates recorded to volume II.Tissue guards protect the frontispieces of both volumes.This work contains a full and rich account of Burton's career as an explorer. It is the only "Life book" written in Burton's own lifetime and it came with his own assistance as he kindly lent to the Author Francis Hitchman the numerous notes which Lady Burton had written at her husband's wish during his long crossing to India in 1876.Scarce set and a great addition to any Burton collection,Vol 1 (xi) 430pp Vol 2 (x) 460pp First Editions 1st Impressions [1887].
